The Sector Rangers - A Brief History & Capabilities

A few decades before the outbreak of the Clone Wars, it was already becoming apparent to some in the Republic government that the rule of law was failing; even on the sparkling core worlds, crime was climbing quickly and more and more smugglers were slipping through the cracks in the system. It was even worse towards the rim, argued the senators of those worlds - entire worlds were slipping to the control of criminal organizations. Something had to be done.

Thus was formed the Republic Sector Rangers Corps by near unanimous vote. The power of the Rangers, as implied by their name, was controlled at the sector level, with each individual sector having a headquarters and reporting back to a central command in the Core Worlds. Unlike the Republic’s military arm, the Rangers were strictly a police force - though one with a galaxy-wide jurisdiction - and were responsible directly to an appointed civilian oversight council.

When Chancellor Palpatine declared himself Emperor, one of his first public acts was to decry growing corruption within the Sector Rangers. Perhaps, he claimed, if they had not been so filled with the very criminals they were supposed to be hunting, the Rangers could have prevented much of the chaos of the Clone Wars before it even began. And so, as part of his moves to cleanse the Republic, the Rangers were quickly reformed.

Under the New Order doctrine, the Rangers were reorganized into His Imperial Majesty’s Sector Enforcement Operations. Gone was the central command, all power given to the sector governors and, eventually upon their formation, the Moffs. The SEO soon began to merge with the military branch of the Empire as stormtroopers were brought in to be the hammer of law enforcement. By the days of the Rebel Alliance, all signs of what had been the Sector Rangers were almost completely subsumed into the Imperial war machine.

Officially.

When the Emperor’s purge began removing “criminal” elements within the Sector Rangers, a number of potential threats to the militarization of the police force were also targeted. A number of these, seeing the way the wind was blowing, disappeared into the very same criminal underground they had been struggling against for years. Underground, they still continued to serve and protect the people from the very worst criminals in the galaxy.

With the downfall of the Empire, a number of those Sector Ranger cells have emerged from hiding - some have simply moved in to supplant the existing SEO forces, absorbing those who hadn’t terrorized the populations into their own forces to rebuild, and some have established outposts on entirely new worlds to help contain the outburst of criminal activity the fall of the Empire has inspired.

One such outpost stands on the world of Noventa…

Noventa Division

Head: Commander Zel Baliss
First Officer: Captain Sienn'me
Headquarters:
  • Noventa City (18 active agents, 3 spaceport customs agents, 6 civilian deputies)
Outposts:
  • Providencetown (2 active agents)
  • Charnel Gulch (1 active agent)
  • Stonebury (1 active agent)
Starships:
  • 1 Gozanti-class cruiser (Occulus)
  • 1 TIE/ln space superiority starfighter
  • 2 Z-95 Headhunters
  • 1 Zeta-class cargo shuttle

Knowing re-supply and support is extremely unlikely, Commander Baliss keeps a tight control on all arms and equipment owned by the Rangers; the Ranger armory and shipyard is likely one of the most secure locations on the planet but even they know there's little chance of being able to hold it if the populace turned against them. No starship or combat vehicle is allowed to depart from the compound without direct permission from either Commander Baliss or Captain Me - particularly, the Rangers' singular TIE fighter is kept grounded (or docked on the Occulus when a mission could require it) unless absolutely necessary for fear of reminding the local population of the Empire.
