(D7 LM, open) What the Farmer Saw

Postby Yara Suhr » Tue Oct 30, 2018 6:08 pm

The farmer's market is quiet and emptier than usual today--many farmers have taken the occupation as a cue to stay home, but others were already enroute with their trucks of produce before they heard the news, or need the business enough to come anyway, or possibly don't fear the occupiers. The same can be said of the Noventa City residents who've come out as usual with shopping bags for their home kitchens or hover pallets for their restaurants; some people may be too frightened to come out, but others seem to think stocking up is more important.

Based on the handful of Imp troopers patrolling the market, the stockers-up may not be wrong, Yara reflects as she picks out some long-keeping root vegetables. The invading force might have its eye primarily on Noventa's mineral and fuel resources, but starship crews and troop complements need to eat as well.

Dressed in an innocuous nerf-wool coat and scarf against the cool autumn air, Yara actually does need some staples for her kitchen, but to be honest she's more interested in taking the temperature of the people here, checking in with farmers she knows, asking townsfolk about their families. A lot of these people hid dissidents or participated in the planet's liberation back in the day, and their innocuous conversations have a subtext that doesn't need speaking out loud: Are you ready? What are we getting ready for?

As you wander around on the streets, a familiar face is there in the farmer's market. Having little choice but to come into town to try to sell his harvest, the Mirulian stands tall with only a small group of others willing to risk themselves in order to make ends meat.

"Farmer Bamsh." Yara waves a hand in a subdued greeting, making her way over to the man once she spots him. "How's your homestead?"

"Ahh, Doctor Suhr." He says with a small smile at her arrival. "It is good to see you doing so well. The homestead is starting to recover, thanks to your help. Ever since that huge manka cat was taken care of, we haven't had any issues with them. Suppose they're trying to get over the sudden change in leadership." He paused and looked around the area solemnly. "Ironic as it is, it seems we're going to have to do the same thing."

Yara's lips quirk at that, but their angle is decidedly ironic. "The people may be less willing to get over it than the cats. I hear Mr. Dunbri is still keeping that big one in his back yard..." she trails off, shaking her head, but watching him curiously.

"Go figure. Well, I wish him the best of it. Creature's pretty powerful if it is left unchecked. One bad mood or one defensive action and it'll cause chaos." Sighing deeply. "Hopefully you're making due with the change. I must admit, I was surprised at my welcome to the city gates this morning. Was forced to leave my truck outside of the city limits because of the gun on its back. Nearly killed us to have to haul everything back and forth to get here before it got too bright. Now we may not even see much of it gone."

He shakes his head. "I never though that would be my primary concern if the Imperials ever came back into control. My sales and my truck; time really has changed me."

"You have more to lose," Yara suggests. "What have you got today, anyway? Imps or not, one has to eat." She smiles wryly. "Feels a bit peculiar to be planning dinner at a time like this, but a person can plan more than one thing at once."

"Hmm...well, obviously can't cook it now. But I do have a few things you can eat easy. Beginning to sort thru the things he brought with him, he lines up a couple of options. "Have some fresh chewing root for you if you want it. Also some Antarian peas, eat them easy leaves and all." He pauses with a smirk. "Also have some Manka jerky." He holds up a bag of meat strips, sliced up and prepared. "It's actually quite good. Been eating this for a few days now." He grinned at the amusement of it at a much simpler time. "Also some pta fruit." He olds up a orange looking sphere-shaped fruit. "If you like sweet things."

"What about you...you gonna take this lying down?" His voice is a lot more hush to ensure voices didn't carry over to the others. It was likely a complete Empire takeover had already occured here, but he didn't live thru the rebellion by taking stupid risks.

"Hmm. I've never quite grown accustomed to those roots, but the jerky looks good..." Yara leans in a bit further to inspect the produce, and also so that her next, quieter words will carry just far enough. "No, of course not. All the people you'd expect are putting a few things together."

He hands her the jerky and nods. "Excellent." He says aloud before realizing what he said. "Yes, this jerky is quite good. Good to hear that you are interested in it." He smiled and handed over the bag to her. "On the house. I owe you more than I could ever pay. Let your 'friends' know I'm here too, though. I can carry a lot of loads of produce with truck if necessary. It may not be much, but it is something I can do for you."

"That's good to know. And thank you." Yara tucks the package of food into her net shopping bag. "You never know when someone will need to move a cargo quickly, do you? And safely from at least a small pack of manka cats, too, thanks to the upgrades that Zeltron mechanic did for you."

Yara hadn't actually spoken to Runi, just seen her working at a distance, so unsurprisingly she'd drawn the obvious (though inaccurate) conclusion about her species.

"Also the fixes Temra made to it the other day. Got the gun in working order, he did." He smiled. "Very talented guy you have in you employ. Hopefully you can keep him around for awhile. Has quite the knack for those things."

"Temra is a good man," Yara agrees. There are, perhaps, a few more layers of meaning there than there would have been before she saw that lightsaber hilt in his hand this morning. "He does rather keep to himself, but I'd trust him with nearly anything."
