Life is an Algorithm [ME4]

Post by Sharn » Mon Oct 22, 2018 3:51 am

It was a simple conservation work on the Charm, but Sharn was irritated. He wanted to get back to his equations even though he knew the vessel required one more look-over after today's salvage operation. He hadn't felt it that much in space, but on the surface of Noventa the Force was indeed palpable after Nygmus had been freed, and in a sinister way.

He had read more, as more of the tome was making sense to him now. Even the arcane parts could be translated to the language of science with some effort. What he was most interested it, operation of the Force on cellular or even molecular level, was partially covered, and he tried to channel new insights by detecting and rectifying microscopic damage to the ship's systems.

The insightful perfection seemed within grasp as long as he was ready to reach into the ambience and push back on air molecules to generate small pockets of vacuum. His strong desire to claim superiority over the challenge or any assumed standards made him tap into that what fuelled the urge... but then he heard a squeak. He quickly located the source - somehow, a rat has slipped into the hangar. Sharn's anger at vermin disturbing him and soiling his work on the ship flared in an instant, and his immediate wish was to stop the rat's heart action. His scientific mind visualised the request as a congestion of necrotic blood cells in the aorta.

Suddenly, perspiration hit Sharn's forehead and the rat... collapsed. It convulsed and thrashed for a few seconds, squealing in pain, then stopped into deathly silence. And Sharn knew he had done it. He had... turned the rat off. What did it amount to? A shutdown. That the matter was carbon- rather than silicon-based, it didn't matter much. At the sub-molecular level, it was all the same, and he was pleased to have practiced this long-recognised reality of life being nothing special, just another set of scripted algorithms.

He wiped off his sweat and got back to work.
