We ran ourselves into ruin [D2, LM]

Built milennia ago, they have been a mystery for ages, and with the nearby volcano, exploration has been slow.

We ran ourselves into ruin [D2, LM]

Postby Quinn Largo » Thu Oct 11, 2018 11:08 am

Quinn had been... antsy... all morning. She was good at hiding it, but those who've spent enough time with her could tell something had been up. Asking didn't yield any real answers; and asking again would only reveal that she had a sudden hunkering to explore the southern continent. A bit of digging would reveal that she was planning to go to some ruins near a volcano, near the southern pole...

...which of course was not really the sort of place a kid should really go by herself. Even one as cocky and generally lucky as Quinn. Nonetheless, she was determined to go, by herself, or with company if need be. But she was going, and that was that.

Whatever was bothering her, she wasn't saying much about it during transit either. Just using her natural talents to shift the conversation on to other things instead, any time it looked like questions might be forthcoming. It was the same once transport went by foot rather than machine.

Joe accompanied the girl after noticing the amount of jitters she had. He wouldn't have noticed the change of behavior except for the fact that he had gotten to know Quinn pretty well while they had been travelling together. They may not share a ton of personal details but you learn how a person acts after a while.

When she finally told him her plan he insisted on going with her. Even a girl as clever as Quinn shouldn't be going to whole other continents by herself.

So here Kor was, trudging a long with the girl and whoever else insisted on coming with them.

The winds whip and howl through the mountain path. Sleet falling heavily upon them. The cold biting to the bone.

Quinn. The Dark, oppressive feeling that seemed to be permeating everything was heavy in the air here.

The mountain pass wound through the range, until an ancient temple appeared in the icy haze. The howling of wind moving quickly past the temple mouth. Ice had completely covered much of the facade, and stone seemed to erode away.

There was no light at all from the door.

Quinn tried to ignore the dark feeling. At least to the point of not being intimidated by it. She hadn't come all this way just to turn back. She was here with a *purpose*. To *prepare* for what was coming for her. And to do that, she needed a weapon. A *real* weapon. And this seemed to be the most likely place on the planet to get one... or a piece of one anyway.

When they arrived at the door to the temple, she placed the scanner goggles on her eyes. Now she'd be able to see in the dark, so Quinn peered inside... and assuming there weren't any monsters waiting to jump out at her, she'd start to move inside.

"Let's go in. You got light? If not, stay close."

She sounded totally in charge.

Kor nodded and pulled out a glow stick he had picked up at the market yesterday "yeah nothing as fancy as your goggles but it'll do well enough." His armor wasn't the best for long treks but he figured the extra protection was worth the discomfort.

"So what is about these ruins that has you so interested and nervous besides?" Not asked as they walked in. He knew the kid well enough to know this place was getting to her for some reason but he had no idea why.

Moving inside the Ruins, no lights, no sconces come on. Only the sound of dripping water from icicles inside the cavernous halls. However, that dark, oppressive feeling still crowded the mind. It was palpable, as pure, unadulterated Fear.

First, a Fear 2 (Discipline or Cool v. Average Difficulty) check. Failing this check will incur 1 Conflict, as Fear is the path to the Dark Side. In addition to the conflict cost, it will add a setback die to every skill check made within the ruins. Threats will be taken as strain, due to the stressful nature of fear.

Secondly, navigating the ruins will require a Cunning/Knowledge (Lore) check at a Hard Difficulty. This isn't relying on your intelligence, but rather the application of knowledge in feeling your way through a maze.

"They're..."

She swallowed the fear away.

"...special. For now... just... trust me."

This was no time to be talking about this; this was the time for moving forward. Besides, explaining things now would just make her seem crazy. And so she walked inside, having said no more. Once inside, her brain seemingly rearranged itself in order for her to put various tidbits of seemingly useless information into the proper context needed to navigate the structure. Somehow it all seemed to make sense. She knew which way to go.

1 strain taken from fear check; not sure if the threat on the maze roll translates into strain as well or something else.

Even though Kor wasn't sensitive the force the pervasive and oppressive darkness of the ruins was not lost on him. He couldn't explain why he felt this way walking into the ancient temple but during his military career he had been in much worse, more dangerous, and certainly more distressing places than simply a dark old room. A dark foreboding feeling doesn't really stack up against rockets flying over head while being bombarded in trenches.

Would like to use an advantage to notice something about the scene at hand.

The halls are dark. Unnaturally so. The feeling of Death and Decay crawling to the base of your spine, Quinn (using the threat on navigating for strain). Making your way your way through the darkness, youn find yourselves in a large, central room. Concenteic rings line the floor.

But there is absolutely no light. The place feels barren, as if something dark that was here is gone.

Though she felt uneasy; even more so with the place feeling so barren; Quinn wasn't going to give up.

"Hey, could you shine some light over here? There's got to be *something* here."

Quinn would try and see if there was something to the rings, or the rest of the room.

Kor did his best to spread the light across the room and illuminate as much of it as possible. He turned to Quinn and then scanned the room "so what's the deal with this place anyway? You know what it is, or I guess used to be."

The rings have begun to fill with dripping water from melted ice, though it appears to only have started recently. In the middle of the rings, is an altar with a dias. A massive, unlit sconce stands behind it.

"I... don't know. Nothing good, I think."

She moved toward the sconce.

"Do you have a way to make fire? I want to light this."

Kor pull out his pack and began to rummage through it to see if he brought anything with him that could be used to start a fire.

((Vigilance check to have brought something small like some matches or something?))

(You have a match. Don't worry about having something here to go about lighting a fire. This isn't a fire stone needed to power up Milla Jovovich)

Kor rummaged for a moment and pulled out a small firestarter that he had packed just before he left. He had figured he wouldn't have come without it. Kor used to be a soldier after all and one of the first things you learn as a soldier is to be prepared for anything.

He handed it to Quinn "this is what I got but I don't know if it'll do any good."

"Let's see," Quinn would try lighting up the sconce. Maybe it'd give them some more light to work with. Either way, after that, she would approach the altar; and placed a hand on it. She wasn't sure if it was the thing to do, but she tried to reach out through the force, to sense her surroundings.

The emptiness of the place is apparent, even without touching into the Force, is stark. Korvalus, as you bring the match to the sconce, it lights, but the flame is weak, as if any breeze could put it out. The dim light also highlights the dais, an empty space... but clearly something was there.

She walked over to the dais and touched it, as if to verify that it was truly empty. And maybe to check for dust to see how long whatever had been there was taken. After that, she'd take another look around the room, the low light now provided by the sconce would surely make her goggles work better now. Maybe whoever had looted this place before had missed something.

Kor did the same looking around and studying the scene. Between the small fire and his glow rod he might be able to notice something useful.
