The Strange Charm was in orbit around Noventa, drifting just inside one of the denser sections of the debris field overhead. Farkas sat at the scanning terminal in the cockpit, to which he had connected his datapad. After initiating some custom routines he had programmed to improve the efficiency of the scans he passed off the datapad to Sharn so that he wouldn't have to hover. The technician didn't mind when folks hovered, but Sharn preferred his own personal space. "I've updated the interface with the preferences you gave me. When you identify salvage that is of particular interest during the scan you can tag it for me and I'll pivot the scan scan to it's coordinates. If an item is tagged, scanned and shows promise it will send a green alert with it's coordinates to the pilot's console."

He turns to look to Syzygy. "That'll be your cue to find a safe approach through the debris to that particular point of interest. Once you've got the path locked in we'll execute the maneuver and collect before returning to a safe area. While the maneuver is being executed the scanner will be finding the nearest safe zone from the point of interest and once located you'll get a blue alert on your console. You can plan your next maneuver to the safe zone during collection. The scanners will restart the search for salvage immediately after the blue alert is confirmed by you Syzygy."

He turns back to his console. "I'm ready."

"All set." Zygy confirmed. "Just tell me where to go."

"I've been for a while." Sharn passed the console back with ready markers. Right or wrong, his brain had processed the data with just a few laps of electrons across his neural highways.

Most of what they started on was lackluster. Not that big of a deal at all. There was a nice piece of hardware that could be re-purposed though.

Then they sensed something that looked like it might be an intact reactor core. As they were going through the motions, a small blip stood out in the scans that pulled Farkas in. He quickly set all other scans to run as background processes and did a deeper dive on it, and noticed that while the core was intact it was also being used to power a malfunctioning ion defense shield.

"Back off from that one Syzygy. It'll fry us. We'll be floating with the rest of this junk. Back of now," he said it in a cool, but matter of fact tone that said it was an order. Completely out of the norm for Farkas. But he didn't like dying in space. True, he'd never done it, but he could assume. As they moved away, he sent the details of the new scan to Sharn. "We got a little too close there. Back to a safe zone, and we'll pick it back up."

The next piece of salvage they found was much less dangerous and much more useful. Many hours later, Farkas stood up and stretched. "Not great, but we didn't fry so there is that."

"You're right not to be impressed. No sign of light craft I have been counting on." Sharn fumed walking back and forth. At some point he stopped by Zygy, blew some air on her neck, and returned to pacing.

"It's a mess out here. We could try making improvements to our scanners, but there is only so much that we can do when dealing with a debris field that rings a planet," Farkas replies. "We'd have to do a cost benefit analysis on any such upgrades. We don't want to sink ourselves with something that wouldn't be worth the credits we might invest. I've done what I can to streamline the process, but we still have limits. All of the POI tracking and alert messaging that made this process move quicker? That's all custom stuff I built for this purpose and it doesn't reside on the ship systems."

"By the way, Syzygy. Good flying. Did the messaging system make sense to you? And are there any changes that you want made to how it works on your end? Whatever makes it easier for you, I'll make happen. That's what I'm here for."

"It worked well." she replied. "No issues. I see no need to change anything."

"Then I might be forced to do some engineering work on the ship to improve the quality of our sensors. Risking lives for change is demeaning."
