Noventa - A Star Wars Story

"I work on a ship. We do odd jobs, courier work, transportation, anything that keeps the bills paid, and us out of the way of the law and the syndicates really. It's not the best job out there, but it's keeps my belly full and the scenery changing." He paused to look over his hands. "Which was all I really wanted when I was young, to do anything but work on a farm."

His hand this time was a fair one, and while he didn't lose any money he didn't gain any either.

The others laugh at you comment, knowing it to be true. "Too right." Jeffsem said, showing his teeth. "So what is it that you do? I've already guessed you're not a card shark."

"Do calls from work ever involve a raise?" Kai asked with a raised eyebrow. "Aren't they usually the boss asking you to come in early, or on your day off, or wanting to ask you about some nonsense that could likely wait until you're on the clock?"

He flashed a grin. "Just asking so I know if I'm chasing some mythical beast or not when I hope for that." Kai finished as he dealt out the hand of cards.

Another hand had already come and gone before Kai returned to the table. "Not to worry, job will pay the bills more than this game will." Maxlero nods in affirmation. "Hopefully it involved a raise, eh?" He smiled and passed you the deck of cards.

With business seemingly done, Kai made his way back to the table. No reason to stop playing cards on account of that phone call after all. "Sorry about that." He offered sincerely to the older men. "work call."

Kai had to roll his eyes, maybe he should just let the fellow fall in the grease one of these days. "Later." He replied simply, not feeling much if a need to keep the call open any longer himself.

"You won't be able to reach me," the voice said cryptically, in a fashion that Kai was certain that on the other end the caller was wearing a shit-eating grin. "My work won't always be like this, but we'll cross that bridge later. You should consider it though. You did good work."

"Anyway, set up a red flag on a crate any time your ship makes port somewhere. I'll see it and contact you. Otherwise... till I need you next," he said with a light laugh of relief. Preparing to end the call.

[Kai is absolved of 5 points to his Favor Obligation]

"Good to know." Was the easy reply as Kai repressed the urge to breath a sigh of relief. "I'll have to think about the work, this was a bit outside our usual comfort zone, but we will see what the future holds."


"Still keep in touch if you need anything, or would you prefer I call you?"

Returned was the distorted voice to which Kai had become familiar, "You and your friends did well. I just watched a very surprised hunter get taken down by the Sector Rangers earlier today. Was quite the show. I could use people like you in the future, for other jobs. This would be paying work, but no need to answer now. I can be in touch. I helped you, you helped me. Debt's settled."

Kai's next hand is actually a good one, and he manages to win back some of the credits he lost when he feels a beeping from his communicator. Taking a sip of his beer, he puts it down along with his cards as the hand ends

"If you will excuse me for a bit, I should probably take this." Kai said with a easy smile to the other men as he rose to his feet and stepped a bit away from the tab;e. "Hello."

Kai receives a notification of an incoming message on his communicator.

"Ah, that kind of place isnt for me, all the haughty people in their fancy clothes. They take the fun out of the game, even if there are a load of lovely ladies serving drinks." Kai replied with a soft chuckle.

"But yeah, things certainly do seem rough around here, it's a wonder how a man find work." He mused as the next game started.

"Now that's a great idea!" Carty exclaims in excitement while the others cheer on in agreement. "Though that won't happen here. Probably if you go up top you could find yourself someone there to do all that." Benado laughs. "Who's got the credits for that, though? Barely make due around here."

The other players show a respectable hand and gladly take your credits once more. Luck will surely come your way soon, though. Right?

"I can't think of may things better." He sipped his beer and played out his hand. Though I think it might just be the younger man in me talking, when I say a cute little thing in a tight black dress serving us drinks would improve the view." Not that they were likely going to encounter such a thing in this place.

"But I take it you all play here pretty often?" He continued as the hand played out, another loss for him it looked like, but it seemed like he was getting th hang of it a bit more.

The dealer waves lifts his left hand up, giving a bit of a wave. "Maxlero." Another one of the players. "Carty." The guy who handed you beer nods. "Jeffsem" He nods and looks over to the guy next to him on the table. "This is my brother, Jeftri." Jeftri gives a nod over at you, not really saying a word in your regard. "He doesn't talk, really." The final guy smiles at you and nods. "Benado. And you're a smart kid. Good to have you here to give these old men your credits."

They all give a heartier laugh at that comment as the cards are dealt again. "View's much better here too. Who doesn't love to see a crashed CIS ship on the skyline."

"Nah, though I'd say outside of cards I'm damn luck indeed." Kai replied with a wink. "My name's Kai. I suppose I should ask who I'm playing with as well." He took a sip from his beer as the next hand was dealt.

"Will make it easier on all of us."

The deck is dealt and with that, the game is on. "Well, quiet isn't exactly here, but we make due. Quieter than it is normally, for sure." He nods and looks at him. "What's your name, kiddo?" The old man who handed you a beer speaks. "Hopefully not Mr. Lucky with that hand." The small group of older men give a small chuckle at his joke, some more out of politeness than others.

The others just drink their beers in response, enjoying the nice crisp evening in the slums.

"Thanks." Kai replied as he caught the can and took a seat at the table, waiting for the cards to be dealt.

"Nah, seems like it will most be big crowds and a lot of kids. Not a lot of reason for me to be out in that so figured I'd find someplace quiet." His first hand wasnt stellar, but then he was just settling in, right?

One of the older gentlemen reach into a chamber and pull out a beer canister for you, throwing it to you. "First one's free." He grunts and plants his rear into a chair as the dealing begins.

The dealer grunts s firmly as you pull yourself up to the table. "Not heading to the festival either, eh? Bit of a bore now nowadays." Passing the cards around, the deck itself lacked the nice computer enhanced features that the casino had, instead it was a actual deck of cards he was dealing.

This was a lot better then the fancy Casino, didn't seem like the place where people would be breathtaking down your neck, or trying to get you to gamble all your money away either. "If you don't mind another, I'll be happy to play." Kai replied with a easy smile, as he tried to banish the memories of the horrid smell to the back of his mind.

"Mind if I buy a beer off someone as well?" It seemed to be the same to ask, and he hadn't brought a drink of his own. Poor thinking on his part obviously.
